The Right Care Right Deal coalition wants a future where people feel supported by a social care system that looks after those with special needs or disabilities.

Our publications show how the system is failing, what needs to change and why social care is everybody's business.

Everybody's Business (September 2008 : Right care Right Deal)

Care and support for the 21st century. Effective care and support services are essential to promote our health, well-being and independence. Yet our existing system is at crisis point. Social care is an issue that could touch all of us. All of us must play our part in shaping the future. As the stories in our report show, social care is everybody’s business.

Finding and financing care in hard times (January 2009: Counsel and Care)

Times remain hard for older people moving into a care home, but they are also getting worse, with difficulties being exacerbated by the ongoing financial gloom, according to a report published by Counsel and Care. The top five issues that older people, their families and carers contacted Counsel and Care's advice service about in 2008 shed light on a community care system in crisis. Worries about how to pay for a care home stay is the biggest concern for older people contacting Counsel and Care's advice service on a daily basis, making up 30% of all calls.

Choice or chore? (November 2008 : Carers UK)

Choice or Chore looks specifically at carers experiences of direct payment schemes. 3 out of 4 carers rate direct payments as better than the services they previously received from their council. Half of the carers surveyed said they had more free time since getting a direct payment. But this positive message also comes with a warning that proper support must be in place to help carers manage direct payments.

Learning from Japan (November 2008 : Counsel and Care)

In a global economy facing profound demographic as well as economic changes, the care debate must be viewed as a worldwide challenge to be faced by all nations. Counsel and Care has published 'Reforming care and support: learning from Japan' and called for a care debate that recognises the global impact of an ageing population.

Lifelong (October 2008 : Counsel and Care )

In a contribution to the forthcoming green paper on the future of care and support, Counsel and Care has published a proposal for Lifelong, a universal package of support for older people, their families and carers. The national charity proposes that better care and support could be paid for from existing resources, including NHS spending, by investing in prevention and a new national care fund.

A Charter for Change (January 2008 : Counsel and Care)

Informal and private care is plugging a funding gap of £25k for every disabled person over the age of 65 in Britain today.'A Charter for Change' report provides a radical new framework for social care which government must adopt to meet 'care funding gap'.

Time for a new social contract? (November 2007 : Carers UK)

The report investigates carers of working age. It sets out the rationale for developing better support for this group of carers. Key challenges in developing services and provision are identified, and reccommendations are made about how they can be tackled by service providers, employers, central/local government publicly funded agencies, employers, families and individuals.
